I'm very interested in what I can do to alleviate headaches/migraines via homeopathic ways. If you have any info on that, pls share. :)
Dolce,
I know very little about homeopathy. But I do know a lot about headaches, so thanks for the question and I hope that I can help you with this post.
Migraines And Headaches
(an MRI of a migraine attack in progress)
Migraines are a complex, fascinating phenomena in the human body. Many people suffer from debilitating headaches, which are the end result of environmental factors, emotional factors, and physiological factors. In my experience, there are two types of migraines. "True" migraines, and "false" migraines, which are severe and debilitating headaches that result for an myriad of reasons.
True Migraines
There are many kinds of migraines, basically named after the place in which they occur. For example, a Basilar artery migraine, opthal-mopeligic migraines, and retinal migraines. These "true" migraines follow a course of events, much like an avalanche or a cascading waterfall. You will know if you are suffering from a "true" migraine if you experience the following symptoms:
1. Pre-Migraine (Also Known as Podrome) - The migraine starts hours, and sometimes days in advance. The body warns the migraine sufferer that there's turbulence up ahead. These warning signs come as a result of seemingly unrelated symptoms, including insomnia, sensitivity to light, nausea, constipation, irritability, lethargy, and achiness. One woman I spoke with told me it felt like a mini-flu was coming on. It is my opinion that the person who pays close attention to their body at this time can soften the effects of the upcoming migraine, of even prevent it from happening at all. 25% - 40% of all migraine sufferers experience pre-migraine.
2. Aura - From what I understand, aura can be as exotic and strange as an LSD trip. A person may have all kinds of hallucinations, not limited to the visual sense. For example, I read a case study of a young boy who suffered from migraines whose aura experience was olfactory hallucinations. He smelled gasoline at times, others, baked apple pie. My opinion is that you should pay close attention to the messages and think about what your body is trying to tell you through your hallucinations. The unfortunate part is that aura sometimes comes in the form of paralysis, confusion, vertigo tingling, or worse.
3. Headache - Brace yourself, because this is going to hurt like hell. I have heard that migraine headaches are so crippling and painful that there are no words to describe the experience. The headache phase lasts anywhere from a few hours to three days. Some poor souls feel it longer than that. At this point the sufferer has no choice but to stay in bed: symptoms include sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, vomiting, inability to regulate body temperature, dizziness, dehydration, depression, anxiety and more.
4. Post Headache (postdrome) - This is described as a hangover feeling and can last for a few hours, even a day. Some describe it as a numb feeling, both physically and cognitively.
False Migraines
"False" Migraines no less serious than true migraines and should be respected for what they are: completely debilitating. False migraines happen for so many reasons. An unknown sensitivity to fluorescent light bulbs. A food allergy or intolerance. The wrong prescription glasses. The wrong medication. A lack of a certain vitamin or mineral. Digestion issues. Sleep issues. Reactions to preservatives and artificial sweeteners. Atmospheric pressure changes and altitude.
So, what can we do about all this?
Alternative Treatment For Migraines and Other Headaches
If you are taking Topomax or Imitrex, keep at it and talk to your doctor before trying anything new. In conjunction with medication, consider: Acupuncture. IT WORKS, PERIOD. In addition to the meridian therapy, there are many Chinese herbs that treat migraines (which I am not qualified to talk about). Also, chiropractic adjustment works wonders. I have a chiropractor friend who does adjustments using a brand new machine which addresses the first two cervical vertebrae. It's a subtle and effective procedure, and from what I am told, a miracle for people who have these horrible headaches. Normal chiropractic adjustment works great too.
Prevention of Migraines and Other Headaches
1. Journal, journal, journal.
First and foremost, start documenting what your body is feeling throughout the day, and do it consistently. Maybe you'll see a pattern emerge!
2. Yoga.
Specific asanas are targeted at relieving the pressure on your upper spinal column, and many people have found that the headaches go away when they stretch. A yoga instructor can tailor a sequence that is best suited for you.
3. Supplements.
Always take a multivitamin/mineral. Deficiencies may be the cause.
Calcium and Magnesium taken together in a 2:1 ratio. For an average adult I would say take 500mg Calcium, 250mg Magnesium supplementation, and you can get the rest from food.
Phenylalanine, an amino-acid, 500mg twice a day, up to 3 grams. This will not only help your headaches, it is a precursor to many neurotransmitters, so it will elevate your mood, too.
5-HTP (a.k.a. L-Tryptophan) 1 gram each night before bed because it can make you sleepy
4. Herbs
The thing you need to know about herbs is that they WORK but you have to take a lot of them. How many times have you heard about the latest "discovery" of an Amazonian plant that they use an extract from to treat cancer? What they don't tell you is that you can find that same extract in whole form in plants at the Herb store. Here's some herbs you can try.
Butterbur 75mg Twice a day
Ginko Biloba 200mg daily
Feverfew - 700 - 800mg daily (though there are mixed reports on the validity of this herb for true migraines)
5. Know your triggers and avoid them like the plague.
Listen to your body and steer clear of the things that make you feel bad. Certain foods, habits, emotional, and environmental factors triggers are common amongst headache sufferers but yours may be completely different. Here's a list of things to consider (and by no means is this a complete list).
Environmental:
bad (fluorescent) lighting
computer screen resolution (too high, too low)
ergonomically incorrect workstation
high heels
perfume
microwaves
pet allergies
other environmental allergies such as mold in AC ducts, old carpet, etc.
Dietary:
beans
pickles
chili peppers
olives
Fruits
dried fruits
avocados
red plums
bananas
any fresh yeast product straight from the oven
yeast breads
pizza
soft pretzels
any preserved or processed meat
bacon
hot dogs
sausage
aged cheeses
sour cream
whole milk
alcoholic beverages, especially red wine
chocolate beverages
caffinated beverages
anything with MSG
artificial sweeteners
vinegar
Emotional/Mental:
excessive stress at work
excessive stress at home
lack of sleep
depression/anxiety
Physical:
PMS
subluxated vertebrae or other misalignments
various related illnesses
touch starvation
medications
So that's all I've got for now. I hope that you have learned something about headaches here today. Is there anything you want me to write about? Please let me know about your headaches or anything else health related by sending me a message, comment, or email at jencpena@gmail.com. Thanks for reading!
